A Night To Remember-by Walter Lord          11/15/12      pages 1-20

I like this book because it is all about the Titanic.  This book is about boat that got hit by the iceberg.  The passengers thought it was just scraped, but it was far worse than a scrape.  The watchman of the ship was off of duty.  He thought he didn't have to worry about the ship, he was still on alert.  He had a chill that another iceberg was coming and he had to go to his station.  He noticed that a big black object was coming straight for the boat.   He warned the ship's captain who was going too fast to dodge the iceberg.  The captain was watching the ice scrape the edge of the boat and soon it was past.

There is Officer William M. Murdock that is the Officer of the telegraph room. He is a very nice man, he is trustworthy and the whole staff can depend on him.  I feel that he was a great officer and I would have trusted him, too.

Fireman Fred Barrett was in the boiler room and felt and heard the bang as the iceberg crushed the boilers.  He had to get everyone out of the area.  I like him because he was the last one out of the room and cared about everyone else's safety.

I'm not sure how I would have felt during that time.  I think I would have felt that it was normal for the boat to shake.  I don't think I would have known what to do and would not have felt too scared.  I would have thought it was the normal way the boat felt.  It was good to have good people to tell others what to do.

The boat starts to sink. All the people are panicking that the boat is sinking and they have no evacuation plan.  If I was on that boat I would put everyone else in front of me and have me go last.  I would die if I was able to send everyone else before me. I bet that a lot of people were scared that the boat was sinking and I would be, too.  But I would also tell people to stay calm that you will be saved and to just do what captain told them to do.  So in the long run I would also do what the captain told me to do.  If he told me to send ladies and children first, I would do it.  If he told me to keep the boilers going and I was working in the boiler room I would do it.  I know that for me to feel good about myself, I would want to help the captain and perform the jost I was asked to do.  I could and would want to save the others.  I would stay calm so that I could get a lot done.

A man named Light Toller helped everyone else.  He was a brave man, he should have a holiday named after him because of his great work.  He saved half of the people. He was just doing his duty and was doing his job; he did what the captain told him to do. The captain also had a major part in this.  He made all the gentle men go last.  Later he told that every person should take care of themselves.

A little boy almost got shot for getting on a life boat.  An older lady interfered and told a leader that the boy was going to be shot.  The man saw the lady interfer and let the boy go.  He was so disappointed to let the boy get on the boat.  The young boy was very happy he was got to be saved and get on the boat.  The entire time the boat was shifting back and forth.  The men that worked for the boat locked arms and only let women and children onto the life boats.  Two men had to hand their boys over the locked-armed men because it was too difficult to get through.

The men had to stay back because the line did not let them through.  People were stuck and three men were trying to help get people unstuck.  After another 20 minutes most of the boats were gone.  Unfortunately, in the panic to get boats out and people onto the boats, many boats were only partially filled.  There were boats that could have had 60 people on them, they only carried 27.  There were even 2 dogs saved instead of people.  People were in such a rush to save themselves that many more lives were lost.   About 4 people watched the shooting stars wishing they would survive.  The boy was sinking quickly.

I know I would have started to panick.  If there was nothing else I could do with the boats gone, I would have looked for a way to prevent the boat from sinking and killing all of us.

The husbands of the wives and the fathers of the children started to jump.  There were boats that did boats that were not full, so the men started to jump to try to swim to the less-full boats.  The captains and leaders of the boats started to yell, "Every man for himself."  So all the men started jumping over the edge and started swimming for the boats.  There were no life jackets to wear.  The felt that they were going to die, so they jumped with hopes of making it to the boats.

By swimming to the boats and getting it in, it makes everyone wet.  If they did make it to the boat and the passengers help these people on to the boat, it made everyone wet.  The passengers on the life boats used all their energy trying to get the men on the boat.  Once on the boat it made everyone wet.  The was was icy and very difficult to maintain your body temperature when in or out of the water.

Many passengers wasted their energy to get these men in.  It wasn't really smart, because they didn't know how long they were row that night.  But, they just couldn't watch these people die before them.

At the Titanic the captain went down to the boiler rooms and told all the workers to tell them to quit adding coal, the boat was to deep to keep going.

I felt the boiler room workers were smart to keep the boat higher in the water so that more people could escape off the boat.  I would keep hoping that we would be rescued by another boat coming to help out.  It would be a very scary time.

Dove: pages1-41 chapters 1, 2, and 3

Dove is a very good book.  It is about a boy named Robin Lee Graham.  Robin was a determined young man.  He loved to sail and worked hard to get a sailboat of his own.  He loved sailing so much that his life long goal was to sail around the world in his own boat.  Eventually he was able to purchase the sailing boat, "The Dove".

In order to help earn money for a boat, He talked his dad into a deal, where if he got good grades for the rest of his junior year, his dad would buy him a small sailboat.  Robin was diligent in doing his homework and stuck to his word and earned good grades.  His dad was impressed with his hard work and bought him a sailboat.

Robin's Dad decided to help him to learn how to sail.  They went out together to learn to use the sailboat.  It didn't going very well.  The sails were tangling and the boat was not going where they wanted it to go, but worst of all the mast broke.  Robin had never sailed before, but was determined to learn.  He read lots of books and eventually was able to fix his sail boat and practice with his Dad.   He soon knew more than his Dad about sailing and was able to teach him better ways.  From then on, he was able to go out sailing in his boat, every day after school.  He sailed all afternoon until right before dark.  He looked forward to sailing every day.  It was what he truly loved to do.

As much as he loved sailing, it soon became the second love of his life when compared to Patti.  Patti was his girlfriend.  Pattie also loved sailing and together they shared many fun times.  They were able to talk, laugh and enjoy the sea together.

Dove:pages 42-87 chapters 4, 5, and 6

The story continues as he sailed in and out of harbors. He was having fun, living life doing the things he loved.  He communicated with his girlfriend, Patti, using his boat radio about once a month. Patti was a very hyper teenager.  When he radioed, she would run all around her block three times before she was calm enough to speak to him.  She was excited to hear his voice. The last time she talked to him she had to take medicine to calm down.  She was so enthusiastic that she almost landed herself in the hospital.  It took a lot of effort for Robin to generate enough electricity to talk to Patti.  He pedaled a bike which created electric currents through magnets to power the radio used to call Patti.  So, he was tired while talking to her but it was okay to him.

When it was late at night the water was more calm.  He was able to sleep best at night when the seas were calm.  When the seas were rough he had a lot of courage to go out during the storm to tie all the ropes and the sails. He also had to check the compass to see where he was going and how fast he was traveling.  He had to move fast so he wouldn't get wet from all the water coming over the side of his boat.

Once one of his masts broke in rough seas.  One storm was so big that the waves crashed onto his boat, breaking the mast.  He was able to find all the pieces and repaired it with rope.  Once he was on land, he replaced the mast and sailed on.

Readings:

The title of my book is Diary Of A Wimpy Kid Cabin Fever by Jeff Kinney. The book is about a teenaged boy named Greg. Its around Christmas time and Greg and his best friend Rowley start up a little shack that has lame video games and food for sale, to raise money. They put up neon posters on the school and it starts to rain and the color comes off onto the wall and a man yells at them and Greg and Rowley run and the man calls the cops. The next day at school was scary for the both of them.

The main problem of this story is Greg gets blamed by the principal for damaging school property and has to face the school. When he is home from a suspension, a surprise snow storm hit and Greg is trapped with his family for the holidays. When the snow melts, Greg will have to face the principle. He is the prime suspect, but he is actually innocent. Is anything worse than being stuck with your family for days?“The snow is piled up three feet high against the front door, so we're basically trapped inside". And I don’t want to give it all away so you are going to have to read it to find out the rest.

I think the book was funny and hard to put down its one of the best books I have read.

The characters are the best part of the book because they look funny and they have wacky personalities. The plot is exiting because it was shocking because they have never got in that much trouble in any of the other books. It doesn’t say much were they live but it looks like a nice neighbor hood with things happing all the time. So if I were to live there I would love it.

Continuing with Diary of a Whimpy Kid.

Greg has a good life; he lives with his mom, dad, a big brother (Rodrick) and little brother (Manny). Greg's little brother Manny always gets Greg in trouble because his mom blames him for the stuff Manny breaks and for the naughty things he does around the house. Greg's older brother Rodrick is a big bully to Greg. He beats him up all the time and always blames Greg for all the things he, himself, does. Greg's mom and dad are kind of crazy when it comes to parenting. His mom always favors Manny, because he is the little kid. Greg thinks this is totally unfair.

Most people look forward to the holidays, but not Greg. The stretch between Thanksgiving and Christmas just makes me a nervous wreck. If you didn’t know already, Greg really isn't a people person.

The setting of this particular event is mostly in Greg Heffley's house. Greg's house really isn’t boring. He has everything a kid could want. He has a video games system, computer, and subscription to his favorite game. He has a best friend (Rowley) that can come over anytime he wants.

Greg and Rowley think they are getting bullied on the way home from school every day, so they tell Greg's dad. Greg's dad goes to the bully's house only to realize that the bully is a little kid. After that, Greg's dad is a little mad that they thought they were getting bullied. The bully's’ name was Nasty Pants. "Dad knocked on the door, to nasty pants house and we waited for one of his parents to open it”

READING BLOG 1
Into the Gauntlet begins as Amy and Dan Cahill enter a London hotel tired and with no lead whatsoever in the clue race.  Amy and Dan are racing against three other groups to decipher the clues.  They receive another lead later in the book, but this is stolen by Isabel Kabra, which is a pet monkey from a competing group.   The monkey also leaves behind a “bug” disguised as a coin  with a fancy script K on it.  Even though Isabel Kabra stole the clue, Dan had already memorized it.  Dan rewrites it for Amy.  Amy looks all over the Internet to find out what the clue might mean, in the process she discovers that these fancy coins are really “bugs” or electronic listening devises.  She destroys it, along with three other bugs from each of the other three branches.
Amy tells Dan that the clue leads to William Shakespeare.  They arrange to go to a performance of Romeo and Juliet in The Globe Theatre.  Once there, they confront one of the competing groups “the Starlings”.  Hamilton Holt, a leader of the Starlings, attempts to steal the piece of paper with the lead on it.  In the process of trying to take the paper, it rips into pieces, part to Hamilton and part to Dan.  As Dan and Amy make their escape, while everyone else is fighting, they try to understand the portion of the lead they managed to keep.  Their section of the lead says: "For this great man we sing was b…".  The rest of the word that goes with the letter "b" was torn off, so they assume that it was supposed to be "born".
At Shakespeare's birthplace, Amy and Dan realize that the word was supposed not “born” but was really "buried".  They rush to where Shakespeare's grave site is, only to discover they are the last of the groups searching for clues and leads to arrive.  What was most surprising of all, was that all the other groups were seen to be cooperating and forming alliances to get more information.  Kind of like on Survivor, nobody trusts each other, but they need to work together on some things.
After unsuccessfully trying to find the clue, the other teams leave the Cahills at the grave site, but also leave behind spy cameras and bugging devices.  The Cahills aren’t fooled. and communicate by writing on a sheet of paper while pretending to draw a picture of Shakespeare. They then go outside to Shakespeare's grave, and Dan does a rubbing of the headstone.  In the process he finds a secret line that had been hidden under false stone.  As he is making the rubbing, the other teams arrive.  Dan pretends to mess up and tears the paper apart, careful to rub just the first four lines when someone from each team asks for a rubbing, which he does, but is careful not to include the fifth secret line.  This last line asks them to dig up Shakespeare’s grave.
Inside Shakespeare's grave, Amy and Dan find a metal pole with the words, "Madrigal Stronghold”, which is the Cahill Ancestral Home.  They also find a ribbon with seemingly random letters on it but are forced to unravel it as the other teams suddenly appear and chase them.  Amy and Dan, once they get away, recreate the ribbon out of the bottom of Amy's old t-shirt and wrapped it around the metal pole to find the coordinates to the house of the original Cahills; a house on an island off the coast of Ireland.

As the Cahills head off to find the coordinates from the clue, the other teams follow, using homing devices they had hidden among Amy and Dan’s stuff.  As they arrive at the island they are shown another clue about a serum that is supposed to give you ultimate knowledge of all things.  But in order to reach this serum they would be tested to open a series of doors that if they failed their very lives would be in danger.
Amy and Dan are unsure of what to do and find that as the other teams, that have followed them, arrive, they will need to work together and use all their clues and skills to get through the gauntlet.  As the teams now approach the first door, they discover that every door except the last one, is already opened.  They see the vial that supposedly has the master serum only to find that  Isabel Kabra, the monkey, has beaten them to it.  Not only has she beaten them to the serum, she has captured many of their loved ones as they had made their way through the gauntlet.  Using sign language Isabel Kabra reveals her intelligence and tells everyone that the serum is fake, and forces them to give her all their clues, to save the people they love.  Isabel is about to drink the serum when Ned Starling bursts into the room, she turns towards him, and lifts a gun to shoot.
Everyone unites and charges her, knocking the gun and the serum out of her hands.  Only Amy and Dan are holding her down while everyone else chases after the traitor Ned Starling.  As Dan and Amy struggle to hold Isabel Kabra down, Amy grabs the vial with the serum and slams it down on Isabel's head.  It shatters, destroying the serum.  The other teams return, having failed to capture Ned Starling and find that the serum has been destroyed.
After finding their way out of the gauntlet, the teams separate on amiable terms, and Amy and Dan stay behind with Fiske Cahill and Mr. McIntyre, who give them a letter from Grace. They then reveal that the entire Clue Hunt was just a preparation for the battle with another family. The letter makes it clear that their adventures aren't over yet.
